It’s a Battle for New York as the struggling Bills meet the equally struggling Jets in Orchard Park.
Buffalo’s season seemed doomed from the start as an unexpected, post-draft exodus from their offensive line complicated a flawed plan at quarterback expected to make the worst skill group in the league work at wide receiver.
This week, Buffalo released veterans, Andre Holmes and Travis Benjamin, as they decided to put their young receivers to the test over the rest of the season. Zay Jones has had some moments, but he will be the clear number one going forward. His success could determine whether he plays in Buffalo next season or not.
Up until now, Buffalo has relied on defense to keep them in games while unproven quarterbacks and injured rushers try to function behind a terrible offensive line. It hasn’t worked enough.
Meanwhile, Todd Bowles keeps winning enough games to make people think he could do better with a complete professional roster. But after their no-show, 41-10 drubbing against this same Bills team in Week 10, calls for his ouster has grown stronger.
The team put up a fight in the first halves of their subsequent games against the Patriots and Titans, but couldn’t close the deal in either. It’s quite possible the team will enjoy a top-3 overall draft pick to go along with their venture into the free-agent pool.
Injuries and notes
Buffalo’s offensive line woes got worse when they put center John Bodine on injured reserve this week. Guard John Miller and tight end Jason Croom are listed as questionable.
The Jets put safety Marcus Maye on injured reserve before last week’s game.
Quarterback Sam Darnold could return against the Bills, putting Josh McCown back on the bench. McCown’s relief role did not produce the success of his 2017 season as he went winless in three games.
Last season’s surprise playoff appearance bought Bills coach Sean McDermott a year of respite. How much blame is laid on him and his general manager for the dearth of talent at receiver and on the offensive line, as well as the judgments made about who should quarterback the team could determine how much slack, if any, they get in their third season.
Todd Bowles looks more like a dead coach walking each week. He was uncharacteristically angry after the Jets blew a 16-point lead against the Titans. After an impressive-looking opening drive touchdown, the team settled for five field goals. Most telling was that few people on the Jets’ sideline seemed terribly concerned about that.

Who will win the Bills-Jets game?
With the Bills conceding they are holding tryouts for next season and the Jets listening to conjecture on who they’ll be working for in 2019, the question is which coach can get his team motivated to play this week.
Each team has an excited rookie quarterback with young receivers, but Buffalo’s wideouts seem to have more reason to layout for a Josh Allen pass than Sam Darnold can expect from his weary teammates.
